World IP Day takes place on April 26. This year the theme is “IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity”.

Back in 2015, when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established, only 1 in 4 active patents related to the SDGs. Today, that number has risen to nearly 1 in 3, showcasing significant progress.

A new WIPO patent analytics report delves into this remarkable shift. It underscores the vital role innovation plays in advancing the SDGs and emphasizes the importance of tracking our journey toward them. This comprehensive report provides data-driven insights into the intersection of patents and the SDGs. From eradicating poverty to ensuring clean water and sanitation, this report sheds light on how patents are driving progress towards a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable world.

While patents alone cannot measure our progress, patent analytics offer invaluable insights. They provide data-driven evidence, revealing the depth of innovation within each SDG and quantifying global inventive activity.
