The project SEED Ideathon on “Access to anti-Covid Vaccine” was successfully held in the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI, Strasbourg), where WIPO was invited to be a member of the jury.

The main goal of the Ideathon was a race of reflection with a multidisciplinary team in a limited time of 24 hours in order to find a solution to equitable access to vaccines. The compulsory licensing mechanism was excluded from the possible solution, so the participants had to analyze the case through the lens of law, economics and science.

There were three teams composed of IP law, economics and public health degree students as well as of the senior experts represented by an IP lawyer, a professional of pharma industry, an economist, and a public health expert.

The Teams presented innovative proposals such as creating an international compensation fund to address legal liability concerns, creating an audit panel of experts from WTO, WHO and WIPO in order to study and assess the existing logistic methods and the public awareness about vaccines, etc.

The solution proposed by the winning team consisted in finding a balance between the different actors (pharmaceutical industries, advanced and least developed countries) by creating two funds: an investment fund and an insurance fund. The team described in detail the mechanism of raising the investments, main actors, and the role of the funds. The Ideathon coincided with World IP Day, highlighting the role of young people in IP as the source of innovative ideas.
