Brand Finance: "79% of IP Asset Value Remains Off the Books & Underutilized on Corporate Balance Sheets"

The Problem of Undocumented IP Assets

Traditional accounting standards remain inadequate for the realities of the modern economy. Today’s most important assets for 21st-century companies—like technology, brands, and intellectual property—are impossible to recognize fully using standard methods. For example, artificial intelligence technologies or unique product designs rarely appear clearly in corporate balance sheets, even though they represent the majority of enterprise value. As a result, financial reporting looks archaic and outdated; it reflects only the physical side of business, missing a huge swath of the world’s most valuable, intangible assets.

A recent Brand Finance analysis shows that 79% of estimated global intangible asset value is not accounted for in company financial reports. In 2024, this invisible value was estimated at nearly $79.4 trillion, a historic high.

Economic Consequences

The failure to record a major class of assets leads to significant challenges. Company valuations often do not reflect the true value of IP, which undermines decision-making by investors and creditors who have to rely on incomplete information. This gap in visibility jeopardizes fair capital market functioning and slows overall economic growth.

Solution: IP Bonds

IP Bonds are innovative financial instruments that allow companies to issue digital tokens backed by their intangible assets—such as patents, copyrights, and brands. Using blockchain technology, IP Bonds provide a transparent and reliable platform to record the real market value of intellectual property. By issuing IP Bonds, companies can officially recognize the value of their intangible assets around-the-clock. This enables a legal basis for circulation of those assets in the marketplace, and—crucially—demonstrates the true value of the business to the world.

The implementation of IP Bonds helps ensure precise tax base calculation, offers protection against unfair competitor practices, and increases a company’s attractiveness to potential investors.

Benefits of IP Bonds

- Transparency and Verification: Blockchain technology safeguards authenticity and prevents data falsification, giving investors confidence in the presented information.

- Access to Capital: Fully recognizing and tokenizing IP makes it easier for companies to attract funding on market terms.

- Economic Growth: Businesses that own technologies and intellectual property gain more opportunities to realize their full potential, serving as a catalyst for long-term growth and resilience.

Modern technology provides a unique opportunity to address these problems, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and reliability of global IP asset reporting.
