The Director General of WIPO, Mr. Daren Tang, has launched the Patent Landscape Report on Hydrogen Fuel Cells in Transportation in Bratislava, Slovakia. During his opening remarks at the Hydrogen Technologies in Transport Conference, he stated that The report finds that fuel cell technologies have gone beyond a tipping point to reach a mature level of development".

The findings of the report show that patent filings are again growing strongly, with the most recent wave of growth having started in 2016, in both fuel cells in general and fuel cell applications in transportation. 96% of patent applications filed and inventors came from five countries, namely China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Germany and the U.S. China, which ranked number five in terms of the number of filings about a decade ago, is the top filer now. Although most patent applications were related to road transportation, there is growth in filings in special vehicles, such as construction vehicles and airport tugs.
