On 11 February 2026, the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST), under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, conducted the second session of its year-long Intellectual Property (IP) awareness initiative, “Let’s Talk IP – IPR Awareness for Viksit Bharat”.
Hosted at Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya (KSV), Gandhinagar, the session titled “From Idea to Patent: The Innovation Journey” brought together innovators, researchers, faculty members, and students in a dynamic hybrid format, further strengthening India’s youth-led IP awareness movement.
The programme witnessed participation from over 200 attendees in person, while more than 7,500 participants joined virtually through live streaming and digital platforms, reflecting the growing national momentum toward IP literacy and innovation-driven development.
Bridging the Gap Between Creativity and Protection
The session focused on demystifying the journey from ideation to patent protection and commercialization. It highlighted how structured IP awareness, combined with institutional support, enables young innovators to transform ideas into protected intellectual assets and market-ready solutions.
The event featured distinguished experts from India’s innovation ecosystem:
-
Dr. Abhishek Singh, Examiner of Patents, Patent Office, New Delhi
-
Shri Mahesh Patel, Scientist ‘G’, National Innovation Foundation (NIF India)
Together, they provided complementary perspectives on legal frameworks, documentation processes, innovation ecosystems, and commercialization pathways.
Understanding the Patent System: From Filing to Grant
Dr. Abhishek Singh delivered a comprehensive session on the Indian Patent System, offering participants a structured “A-to-Z” overview of:
-
Patent documentation and drafting essentials
-
Filing procedures and timelines
-
Examination processes
-
Legal provisions and compliance requirements
His practical guidance on drafting strategies and procedural clarity equipped students and faculty members with essential tools to navigate the patenting process effectively. The session emphasized that quality patent documentation is not merely procedural compliance but a strategic instrument for innovation protection.
By making the patent system accessible and understandable, the session addressed one of the most significant barriers faced by first-time innovators, procedural complexity and lack of awareness.
From Patent to Market: Strengthening Grassroots Innovation
Complementing the legal and procedural perspective, Shri Mahesh Patel focused on the broader innovation-to-enterprise journey. Drawing from real-life examples and experiences at the National Innovation Foundation (NIF India), he highlighted:
-
The importance of nurturing grassroots innovation
-
Institutional mechanisms that support early-stage innovators
-
The transition from patent protection to commercialization
-
The role of confidence and ownership in youth-led innovation
He emphasized that protecting knowledge empowers young creators, builds innovation confidence, and accelerates the transformation of ideas into enterprises, contributing to a science- and technology-driven economy aligned with India’s long-term development vision.
Institutional Commitment to Inclusive Innovation
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Narottam Sahoo, Advisor and Member Secretary, GUJCOST, reaffirmed GUJCOST’s commitment to strengthening Intellectual Property awareness across academic and research institutions. He highlighted the importance of inclusivity in science and innovation, particularly the contributions of women and girls in nurturing scientific temper and advancing equitable development.
Dr. Sahoo also underlined the relevance of IP in everyday life, encouraging participants to recognize intellectual property not merely as a legal tool, but as a catalyst for economic empowerment and societal progress.
A Scalable Hybrid Model for IP Capacity Building
The “Let’s Talk IP” initiative is structured as a monthly hybrid series conducted on the second Wednesday of every month throughout 2026, combining in-person engagement with large-scale digital outreach. This model ensures accessibility for students and innovators across geographical and institutional boundaries.
The February session reinforced several key pillars:
-
Mass IP Awareness: Reaching thousands of youth through hybrid platforms
-
Practical Skill Development: Hands-on understanding of patent systems and documentation
-
Institutional Strengthening: Integration of IP literacy into academic ecosystems
-
Innovation-to-Market Orientation: Bridging protection with commercialization
The programme concluded with an engaging interactive Q&A session, reflecting strong enthusiasm and a growing appetite for structured IP learning among youth participants.
Advancing a Knowledge-Driven Economy
Initiatives such as “Let’s Talk IP” align with broader global priorities championed by WIPO, including IP education, youth empowerment, and strengthening innovation ecosystems in developing economies. By embedding IP literacy within academic institutions and innovation networks, GUJCOST’s approach demonstrates how regional institutions can play a transformative role in scaling IP awareness nationally.
As India continues to expand its innovation footprint, programmes that connect idea generation, legal protection, and commercialization pathways are becoming increasingly critical.
The February session at KSV stands as a strong example of how sustained, expert-led engagement can inspire youth, demystify Intellectual Property systems, and convert creativity into protected and impactful innovation.
Through continued monthly engagement under the “Let’s Talk IP – IPR Awareness for Viksit Bharat” series, GUJCOST aims to empower the next generation of innovators, ensuring that ideas do not remain abstract concepts, but evolve into protected intellectual assets that contribute to sustainable development and economic growth.
