India Waives IP Registration Fees for the Sports Sector for Three Years and Launches National Design Hackathon

Submitted by PRASHANT SHARMA on

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister announced a three-year fee waiver for all intellectual property registrations related to sports, effective immediately. The waiver covers trademarks, copyrights, patents, designs, traditional knowledge, and geographical indications. The measure is part of a special drive to encourage domestic innovation and manufacturing in sports goods. The Minister highlighted the potential of sports manufacturing clusters in regions such as Jammu & Kashmir and Meerut, and cited the GI-tagged Kashmir willow cricket bat as an example of India’s IP strength. He also launched the “Viksit Bharat Digital Matrix 2026 – Design Hackathon,” a six-month initiative organised with IIT Delhi to foster patentable and design-led innovations in smart wearables. The announcement was made during World Intellectual Property Day celebrations under the theme “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!” The Minister further urged stronger use of CSR funds for sports infrastructure and encouraged innovators to follow the pathway of “innovate, patent, produce and prosper,” noting that expanding trade agreements are opening new markets for Indian IP owners.
